Borneo Travel and Backpacking Guide

Orangutans

Are you looking for a unique and exciting adventure? Explore beautiful Borneo! This island is divided by Malaysia and Indonesia and satisfies all tastes by bringing to life jungle walks and wildlife. Delve into the national parks, stay in a longhouse, travel by bus and longboats to uncover the charms of this abundant island.

Borneo is a one of the most beautiful islands in the world, with its amazing wildlife, jungles, rainforests and tropical islands. From Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, you can explore so many places including the nearby coral islands with its pristine white beaches, clear water & snorkelling opportunities.

Be sure to visit Poring Hot Springs to observe wildlife from the canopy walkway and relax in the mineral springs. In Kinabalu National Park you can take a nature walk and visit the mountain garden, before spending a few relaxing days cruising along the Kinabatangan and Menanggul rivers in search of proboscis and silver leaf monkeys, wild orang utan, gibbons, hornbills and other wildlife.

I would recommend making your next stop Selingan Island, where, in season, giant sea turtles arrive at night to lay their eggs.

A trip to Sabah would not be complete without a visit to the Sepilok Orang Utan Centre, where mans closest relative is being rehabilitated back into the wild.

A tour of Sandakan including the Water Village with its traditional stilted houses is recommended, before travelling back to Kota Kinabalu, bringing an end to the ultimate Sabah adventure.

Top Things to Do in Borneo

Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
See the endangered orangutans up close, this really is something to tick off your bucket list.

Mount Kinabalu, Borneo
South East Asia’s highest mountain is scaleable: you need to be fit but not a mountaineer. The mountain is surrounded by a National Park which protects a botanical paradise, including the world’s largest flowering plant (the Rafflesia), pitcher plants and many bird species. Kumuka’s two-day assault on the peak sees all these and more, with views from the summit to the Philippines.
