It’s certainly no secret New Mexico has some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. New Mexico also has the best weather for travelers who love the outdoors. The crisp air and brilliant colors offer hikers a very rich and scenic experience.
Need help planning your outdoor activities or choosing the perfect train? Here’s my list of the most picturesque hiking trails worth exploring.
1. Santa Fe Ski Basin
There are a ton of hiking trails along the road. Once you make your way to the top, I recommend taking the ski lift to see ‘the top of the world,’ as I like to call it. Hikers will also enjoy voyaging their way through the colorful trees in this area.
Pro tip: Hiking trails are easily accessible from any parking pull-off you see. Just remember the higher you go, the cooler it gets. Bring sleeves for when the temperature drops.
2. Tesuque Creek Trail
I highly recommend checking out this 4-mile loop trail, which is great for the novice hikers as well as experts. This stunning hike is located near Santa Fe and is easily accessible from May through November.
3. Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch
If you’re looking for hiking trails with amazing views of the desert and unique rock formations, Ghost Ranch is a must see! On this drive, you can see fall’s vibrant colors on the cottonwood and aspen trees. Outdoor activities offered at Ghost Ranch Education & Retreat Center like horseback riding will surely make your journey memorable.
Pro tip: Lather up! Sunscreen and sleeves are a must even in the fall and winter. The altitudes are higher, placing you closer to the sun.
4. Tsankawi Ruin
Any true adventurer dreams of going to Tsankawi Ruin, where numerous caves and petroglyphs are waiting to be explored. The Kiva ladders are great for climbing, too! The 2.5 mile loop trail is accessible year-round, and there’s even a trail guide at the entrance with detailed description of the site.
