Bali

Whether exploring an individual destination or going on an epic round the world adventure, travelling can be one of the most exciting experiences of your life. But with so countries in the world, where is best to visit?

If you need inspiration for your next trip, get ready to pack your bags to discover some of my favourite backpacking destinations.

Before I get started, if you are looking to travel, I really recommend booking a trip with ether G Adventures or Contiki. Both companies offer hundreds of amazing small group tours where you will get guided to the best locations, travel with like-minded people and have tons of fun.

Here are my picks for the world’s most popular backpacking destinations that you really need to add to explore.

1. Indonesia

Gili Islands

Indonesia is the perfect destination for every type of traveller, whether you are a backpacker on a budget, or someone who just wants to sunbathe, dine, drink and explore the country in luxury.

Indonesia is diverse and there are so many unique destinations and experiences available. From getting close and seeing exotic and endangered orang-utans in Borneo, to exploring busting cities, to enjoying some of the most incredible bars and parties on the planet.

Bali, although well on the backpacker trail, is still one of my favourite destinations in Asia due to the stunning golden beaches, temples, culture and cheap food and accommodation.

2. Thailand

Thailand beach

Thailand is one the most popular tourism destinations in the world attracting millions of travellers every year and there are so many reasons to visit.

Think super modern bustling cities like Bangkok, stunning islands, pristine white sandy beaches, friendly people, tasty food, world famous attractions and also great value for money accommodation.

On a trip you can discover some of the most beautiful islands in Thailand, visit en elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, go hiking to see Hilltribes, or take part in the epic Koh Phangan full moon party – one of the wildest parties on the planet.

If you are planning to go backpacking for the first time or keen on a round the world trip, I really think Thailand should be the first place you go.

2. Australia

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Although one of the most expensive countries on my list, Australia is incredible for backpacking and an essential destination to see at least once in your life.

There are world famous cities, beaches, islands, parties and some of the best hostels in the world. From exploring cities like Sydney, seeing the Great Barrier Reef, going on an adventure in the outback, learning to surf, seeking out the best beach or staying in some of the best hostels in the world – I loved Australia and I think you will too.

Australia is also one of the most popular gap year destinations and if you are short on cash, or just keen to try living abroad, you could apply to work in Australia on a working holiday visa and spend 12 months earning money and exploring the country.

3. Portugal

Algarve beach

I couldn’t write a guide to backpacking hotspots without including Europe, this continent is historic, fascinating and also has amazing world famous attractions and beautiful islands.

Of course when thinking to travel in Europe most people tend to lean towards cities like Rome, London, Barcelona and Paris – all cities that need to be visited, but have the seen the prices in these destinations recently? You can easily spend hundreds per week on basic hostel dorm rooms, which is not ideal if you are on a small backpacker budget.

This is why Portugal is one of my favourite countries in Europe, it offers some of the best value for money, and with scenic cities and a stunning coast, there are a lot of different places to go.

Portugal is a really beautiful country with gorgeous scenery, white sandy beaches, delicious seafood and friendly locals. If you want to learn to surf lots of school offer classes here.

You could begin your trip in Porto and make your way down to the Algarve, which is the southernmost tip of Portugal, with some of the best beaches in the world.

5. Colombia

Colombia beach palm trees

Ask anyone who has been travelling in South America and I think there is a good chance they will say Colombia was their favourite country.

Colombia has varied terrains, from the stunning laidback Caribbean coast to the bustling football mad cities. Colombia will soon wear down your phone battery as there are picture opportunities everywhere you go.

Colombians are some of the friendliest and most inquisitive people you will ever meet and this country is a lot safer than you might think. Really don’t let the worry of crime put you off, go and enjoy this stunning country for yourself. Before going though be sure to learn some Spanish travel phrases which will make the experience of getting around much easier.

6. Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most pricey destinations in Central America, but it is one of my top picks for any backpacking itinerary due to the tourism infrastructure, accommodation and places to visit.

Costa Rica is very safe and boasts wonderful activities, fantastic accommodation and unique adventures like climbing volcanoes!

The friendly locals will take you for a salsa twirl and also show you where to get the best seafood. From climbing volcanoes to learning to surf or volunteering and helping wildlife like sloths, Costa Rica is amazing.

7. Guatemala

Antigua, Guatemala

The Central American country of Guatemala boasts scenic towns, amazing Mayan ruins, world renounced Spanish tuition and a chilled atmosphere.

Guatemala is a lot more affordable than most countries in Central/South America, and attracts a huge community of adventurous travellers. With its colourful buildings, picturesque churches and cobblestone roads, Antigua is a must visit location and one of my favourite places in the region.

Other places I recommend include the majestic Tikal ruins – really underrated, whilst Lake Atitlan is the perfect relaxing destination or location to learn Spanish.

8. Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most popular travel destinations in Asia and it is easy to see why millions of foreign travellers visit the country every year.

The coastline is spectacular and by visiting you can learn more about the history of the country and see some really special locations. Highlights include visiting Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Hanoi. Hoi Ann and the mega city of Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam also offers great value for money, with food, accommodation and activities all very cheap even compared to other countries in Asia. Keen to go? View some important things to know before visiting Vietnam.

9. Peru

Machu Picchu

If you are looking for the ultimate holy grail destinations, then the Inca Trail is somewhere you just have to go.

But there is far more to Peru than just Machu Picchu, you can trek along the Peruvian coastline to find secluded beaches, lively little towns, spicy food and friendly locals.

More places to see include Cusco, the Nazca Lines, Rainbow Mountain and the breathtaking Amazon rainforest. Peru really won’t disappoint.

10. New Zealand

New Zealand

As well as being one of the most visually spectacular countries in the world, New Zealand is also one of the best destinations for adventure.

From some of the highest bungee jumps in the world, to skiing on incredible slopes to exploring hot springs and fjords, New Zealand is an amazing outdoor playground. Cities like Auckland, Queenstown and Wellington are also essential must go places on any overland itinerary.

Renting a campervan in New Zealand is really popular, as well as small group tours of the north and south islands. On a tour you will be guaranteed to meet other backpackers from all over the world, have a laugh and also see the highlights.

I can hear you screaming at your phone, laptop or tablet, how could you leave countries like Cambodia, Laos, India, Brazil, Spain, Mexico etc off your list??!! Well, there are so many places in the world which are amazing to travel, but hopefully my selections have given you some ideas for where to go.
